Çengelhan Rahmi M Koç Museum, Ankara

Work recently took me to Ankara, for a conference on Cloud computing organised by Microsoft Turkey. For the most part Ankara is a rather soulless expanse of office block, but in the historic centre there are a few attractions including the Çengelhan Rahmi M Koç Museum, a branch of the larger Koç Museum in Istanbul. We went there for lunch on the closing day of the conference and had a chance to look around.

It terms of atmosphere it very much reminded me of the Wellcome Collection, albeit with a wider focus; there was the same sense of someone finally having the resources to indulge in rampant collectormania regarding his pet interests.

The full set is here, with captions.

This I would not have expected...

Is that a Sopwith Pup on the right?

I'm not sure - unfortunately I couldn't find the relevant plaque in the time I had to look around. I'm assuming they're aircraft associated with WW1-era air operations in the region.

Scratch my earlier comments.

The one on the right is an Avro 504. No 'hump' over the engine cowling just in front of the pilot, and the single skid between the wheels - and it's a two-seater.

The one on the left looks like an S.E.5 (or S.E.5.a)
