Dear BBC: Your headline is attention-grabbing but not entirely accurate

BBC News front page main headline: UK economy comes to a standstill.

[Peers out of window]

Cars? Check. Buses? Check? DLR trains? Check. Twenty-Eight Days Later-like absence of life or economic activity? Not on present evidence.

There is a subtle difference between 'economy stops growing' and 'economy stops'.

The headline at the above link does now say 'UK economic growth at standstill'.

And now it says 'UK economy comes to a standstill' again. Volatile thing, this economy...

I can confirm that capitalism is proceeding at the usual breakneck speed around here. The investment management dept (at least) would be freaking out if it weren't, and I've just seen him in the kitchen making himself a coffee.

Yes, they seem to have changed this one. They do have a big problem with value vs derivative vs second derivative though.

I think there is a desperate attempt to pretend that we are not entering a recession. But obviously it hasn't just STOPPED.

'Capitalism' = headlong rush towards ... um ... some people having lots of money.

'Growth' = evidence this is good

'Recession' = inkling this is ultimately unsustainable. So PANIC, oh plebs!
