Life on Mars - First Thoughts

Some first thoughts on Life on Mars, eps 201 and 202.

The weirdness coefficient seems to have been cranked up slightly; perhaps the writers are more confident with what they can get away with? Or perhaps we're seeing the start of a series-long plot arc that will culminate with the much-heralded revelation of What Is Actually Going On.

So, what is the significance of Hyde? What is the incident that the temporarily-assigned DC (and Sam's future boss) alluded to? And what on earth is going on with Hyde 2612? The voice on the other end's references to "the rules" might reinforce the idea that Sam is a participant in a 'godgame narrative', a Truman Show scenario where he is becoming aware that he is playing a defined role in a stage-managed world.

I wasn't terribly convinced by the denouement of episode 201, unless the writers were trying to make the point that in those days all you needed was for a couple of coppers to point you out as a nutter and you were carted off to the loony bin. Perhaps this was why we had the scene earlier in the episode with the schizophrenic - or was there something more significant in his words to Sam about hearing voices and knowing the truth about the world? Have the rest of Sam's colleagues shrugged off Crane's report of Sam's confession as the ravings of a madman, or do some of them perhaps suspect that at the very least there might be something to them?

Best line from last night: "We don't have any evidence! And I can't believe I just said that!" - DCI Gene Hunt.

So where did that icon come from? Life on Mars as the love-child of Midsomer Murders and Camberwick Green?

It's from here, and is from the BBC's Season 2 teaser done in the style of the Camberwick Green intro.
